The festive season will soon be upon us. That time of year where we gather together with loved ones, hug a mug of hot chocolate and enjoy the best food. Christmas always brings the best out in people and we can’t wait for it. Yes, it’s a colder time of year and we are living in uncertain time once again but just like before, we will make it through and we will do it together.
With Christmas, comes winter, a time where those who live with inflammatory conditions (like arthritis) have to deal with potential flare ups. The stress of preparation for the big day and the cold weather can put extra strain on your body and cause it to act up.
That is why we wanted to share 5 ways to help you manage arthritis this winter so that you can have a ho ho happy time with the family.
Don’t let stress get the better of you:
Wrap up:
It was Dr. E. Mody that said it best ”the fluid in your joints is like the oil in your car. It doesn’t move as well in the cold weather”. Make sure you wrap up this winter and to keep on top of the hot drinks. Nothing warms you up more like a hug from a mug of tea/coffee/hot choc. Make the experience even more enjoyable by using your tilt-to-pour Uccello Kettle too. A great daily living aid especially for those living with arthritis.
Move about:
Winter is a time of year where many of us seem to naturally move into some sort of hibernation. We don’t exercise as much, there is more sitting down and enjoying treats especially since the TV is always better this time of year.
Try to keep some form of activity in your daily schedule, this will help reduce stiffness and pain. Move as often as you can – at least once an hour, even if it’s a walk about the house. If the weather outside is frightful, there are a number of ways you can keep active indoors. Try:
- Hold muscles for 5 seconds
- Flexing
- Stretching
- Walking
Don’t forget your supplements:
It’s far to say that we don’t see the sun a lot throughout the year. We may have a good week here and there but it’s doesn’t have a constant presence in our lives. This can actually have an affect on your body because, we need the sun so our bodies can product vitamin D. For healthy bones and teeth, you need to make sure you have the right amount of vitamin D and calcium and of course if you are unsure, talk to your doctor.
Eat right:
This time of year for many of us is the time to indulge and many say farewell to their healthy eating habits. It’s the ‘Hey, it’s Christmas‘ kind of attitude. While I myself am a big fan of this way of eating, for those with arthritis, the indulgent lifestyle can lead to painful flare ups.
If you are struggling, it can be easier to balance it out. With your buttery mash, try to include healthier fats. This could mean adding more Omega-3 fatty acids which includes:
- Fish
- Walnuts
- Soy
