Active hands in a company set up by Rob Smith the company director and designer of their gripping aids.
Rob was 20 years old and studying Mechanical Engineering at Warwick University. On a break from Uni with friends, Rob had a tragic accident and fell off a cliff. He suffered a high-level spinal cord injury which sadly has left him with partial paralysis in all four limbs. Meaning he can find it difficult to grip and hold things with his hands.
Rob has an incomplete injury which means his spinal cord was not completely severed so he is able to stand and walk for very short distances. For the majority of his day-to-day, Rob uses a wheelchair.
What is Active Hands?
Active hands origin story is quite similar to our own here at Uccello Designs.
Like Andy (our founder and creator), Rob found that there was nothing out there that enabled him to overcome his grip problems so be began to design make his own gripping aids to help him claim his independence back.
The gripping aid was originally designed for Rob to use himself. It wasn’t until some of his wheelchair rugby mates saw him using the grip aid in the gym that Rob thought he had the potential to help more people in a similar position to him. Soon after, Active Hands was born.
Rob and his family run the site for active hands and are always thinking of the best way they help others with their creations or possibly partnering up with other like-minded companies like ourselves.
We actually met Rob at the Occupational Therapists Show in Birmingham last year and since then we have been delighted to receive amazing feedback on tour kettle from Rob.
We are so happy that we could help make a difference to Robs every-day like with our Uccello Kettle. See for yourself with his video review below.
