Since 2019, we have all been through some difficult times. Many people feel that there have been some positives to come from it though. With everyone spending more time at home and being more present in our communities, there has been a wave of community action. Neighbours are talking to neighbours, supporting one another and caring for their community more than ever before.
The Big Lunch:
This year, there are more reasons than ever to get together and that is why the team at The Big Lunch have made it extra easy to share lunch with your community. This year’s event isn’t just on one weekend, it across an entire month and kicks on this Saturday, the 5th of June. All you need to do now is pick your big date to celebrate.
The Big Lunch kicks off the month of community. This enables everyone to help and support a number of charitable events throughout the summer. This month you could:
- 1-7 June – Volunteers Week: Host a big lunch to cheer on the nation’s volunteers.
- 5-11 June – Neighbourhood Watch Week: Lunch with next door & get to know your neighbours
- 7-13 June – Carers Week: Celebrate and value our unpaid carers with a cuppa
- 14-18 June – Loneliness Awareness Week: Understand loneliness and lift our spirits with a laugh
- 14-19 June – Small Charity Week: Raise money for local charities
- 14-20 June – Refugee Week: Ensure that everyone feels welcome
All of this is to show that we all have more in common as we celebrate the end of lockdown (hopefully). We can do this in s many ways: with a picnic, a big street party or simply over a cuppa and a cream cake.
This year’s Big Lunch really is a moveable feast, so feel free to join in on the month of community and let’s all celebrate our connections together.
Big Lunch Ideas
Already there are a number of Big Lunchers sharing their plans so they could give a few ideas for yours?
Packing a Picnic:
Lots of Big Lunchers are keeping it simple this year, packing a picnic and heading to the nearest green space to spread out on a blanket.
Lunching Digitally:
Hosting your annual lunch online can mean you are safe to have more guests because you would all be safe at home. You can play quizzes, jokes and stories from your deck chair or living room sofa. Perfect time for a cuppa.
Socially Safe Street Parties:
Street parties might not yet be back to what we would hope. There is nothing to say you can’t all set up in your gardens so you and your neighbours can connect from a safe distance.
Fundraise with Fab Food:
Many have used the Big Lunch to fundraise. In fact, £8.2 million was raised at events in 2019 – mostly for local charities and causes. There are plenty of fundraising tips and ideas in the free Big Lunch pack.
