When it comes to both our mental and physical health, it is important for us to know how to overcome stress or stressful times in our lives.
Today’s world is choc-full of stress triggers , whether its work, family, bills, Covid etc., it can be difficult to navigate a way through the smoke when stress has taken hold. That is why we are here to help shed some light on the subject and share some great stress busting tips.
Understanding Stress
In its most basic form, stress is our bodies reaction to a challenge or a demand. This doesn’t mean that is a bad thing. In fact, in short bursts, stress can actually help you. For example, to avoid danger or meet a deadline, stress is known to help.
It’s when we have prolonged bouts of stress that it starts to take its toll on our bodies and our minds.
What Are The Common Causes Of Stress?
- Work
- Money
- Relationships with partners, children, other family members
- Sudden changes – Unemployment, bereavement, changes in your living situation
Sadly, there isn’t just one fix that suits all solutions to coping with stress. While one person may find it relaxing to learn something new like how to play an instrument. Another person may find it too demanding and frustrating.
Over the years, we all know or learn to know what it is that helps us to relax and unwind. Of course, for those of you looking for some new ideas on how to de-stress, I have a few tricks up my sleeve.
Something New:
When I am stressed, I find that the best thing is to learn something new. For me its a physical activity. It could be crochet, painting, pottery anything that gets me working with my hands. It is the total opposite to my work and there fore take my mind off of it completely.
There is nothing better then to completely submerge yourself into than a new hobby, especially a creative one. You are excited, having fun and there is something physical you can put your hands on afterwards. Fruits of your labor.
A Bit of R&R:
It can be hard to get some ‘me time‘ just to unwind. Usually, I would recommend a holiday or a day trip but with the virus numbers being so high, perhaps not!
This is where you have the opportunity to turn your home or even a room in the house your own relaxing zone. What about taking a relaxing bath or longer shower to help you unwind or even a cuppa with a good book or a movie you’ve been itching to watch.
Perhaps even a challenging workout at home is just the ticket. Aerobic exercise gets your heart rate up and releases endorphins (the feel-good hormone).
Don’t Underestimate A Good Night’s Sleep
The average adult needs between 7 – 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. With a busy home or schedule, this can be hard to achieve. Give yourself some time to adjust and focus on a new bedtime routine that now includes 7-9 hours of sleep.
A top tip here would be to avoid screens a least 30 mins before going to bed. So instead, read a book, have a cuppa so that looking at a screen isn’t the last thing you do.
Meditation/Yoga
There are many free to view videos online these days (YouTube) or even apps you can download to your phone to help with meditation and yoga.
They can be done anytime throughout the day. The whole point is to help you take 10 minutes out of the day just for you. A chance to catch your breath and as the saying goes, smell the roses.
If these are not for you, perhaps taking small breaks throughout the day for a cup of tea with your very own Uccello Kettle or to take 10 deep breaths can help.
Whether you follow our guide or have something else that better helps you to relax during these challenging times, we hope you are safe and well.
