We wouldn’t be wrong in saying that we are a nation of tea and coffee lovers now, would we? The Tea & Infusions Association has even worked it out for us – we drink near 100 million cups of tea and 70 million cups of coffee a day here in the UK.
Don’t forget, you boil your kettle even more than this – what about when you are cooking pasta, noodles etc? The kettle can be put through a lot on a day-to-day basis, but we wouldn’t be without it.
Depending on where you live and the water in your area, you will notice a build up of limescale in your kettle. This is what we call the silent killer of kettles. It’s the white chalky material that you can see sticking to the element of the walls of your kettle.
While you may not be able to stop this from happening there are ways you can maintain or manage limescales effect and that’s why we are here today.
What is Limescale?
There is no harm done if you ingest limescale, but no one enjoys the grit or bits in their cuppa. But the bad news is that it can be harmful to your kettle.
Limescale build up means that your kettle must work hard, will take longer to burn and it can reduce the kettles overall lifespan.
Interesting fact – Limescale can add up 28% more on your annual energy bill.
The number of times you need to descale your kettle is really dependent on the mineral content of your water. In general, a descaling every few months will keep your kettle in tip top shape.
