October 27th is World Occupational Therapy Day. It is a day where we acknowledge and celebrate occupational therapists in their work. It is a noble profession that has helped the lives of many worldwide.
Occupational therapy and technology are beginning to go hand in hand these days. The advancements in technology are allowing OT’s to be able to help many more people live independently.
The main aim of technology is to help make our lives better and/or easier.
Technology helped in the advancement of many different sectors today:
- Helping move the production line faster in manufacturing
- Designing the perfect house in construction
- Hospitality
- Medical research
- Even in occupational therapy
What is Occupational Therapy?
It’s where a healthcare professional offers support to those with physical, psychological, and/or social problems/issues to help them to live their lives to the fullest.
Technology isn’t necessarily something an occupational therapist would use with their daily practice. OT’s are used to using low-tech devices like therapy putty and sock aids. They are extremely helpful for their patient’s recovery and maintaining their independence.
What is Assistive Technology?
It is an assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities or the elderly population.
Occupational Therapy & Assistive Technology:
In order for an occupational therapist to help people maintain independence and carry out their day-to-day tasks, they often look for alternatives or modifications out there to help promote independent function.
These ”alternatives” will help you find ways to carry out tasks by minimizing the stress or pressure you put on yourself. Assistive technology devices can help you to conserve your energy and get through the day with less pain.
Our Uccello Kettle falls under the umbrella of assistive technology and is loves by occupational therapists the world over.
Its funky design has certainly caught our patients’ eye and the unique pouring function is a safe, ergonomic way for people to pout hot water – even those without a hand injury or condition!. We are happy to recommend this product to anyone
– Rachel Ross, Hand Therapy Occupational Therapist
We have been taking the kettle out to lots of seniors’ events and there were lots of interest and positive comments. It’s great that there is finally a kettle that has form and function.
– Amanda, Occupational Therapist
I think it’s fantastic. The difference between that and some of the other kettle tippers that have been on the market for a while is the pivot point of the Uccello is actually in the center of the kettle. So, when you tip it, you’re not actually lifting the weight of the water. You are actually moving the kettle around the water. It’s an extremely light touch.
– Sacha Marchant, Occupational Therapist
