In the UK, a war veteran, Captain Tom Moore is the COVID-19 hero that Britain needs right now. Tom is the good news we need in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Plan:
Tom wanted to raise £1,000 for the brave NSH staff. Why? because they supported and cared for him during a cancer scare and a bad fall where he fractured his hip. He was so touched by their care and after-treatment.
When COVID-19 hit, Tom wanted to give something back to them this time. Something to help the brave healthcare workers who were putting their lives on the line to help us all.
You are all entering into something where you are putting yourself in danger and you’re doing that for the good of the people here. You are doing a marvelous, marvelous job.
– Captain Tom Moore
A change of plan:
Originally, the £1,000 was to be raised by Tom doing 100 laps of his own garden. 50 meters at a time before his big birthday where he would be turning 100.
Tom and his family were in total shock to see donation jump in the thousands in a short time.
Captain Moore, who served in India during World War II had drawn national and international attention. Mainly due to his documented walking adventure on his social media pages. So much so that his JustGiving page crashed continually due to the sheer amount of donations from people all over the UK and the rest of the world.
A race against time:
His birthday was in April this year and the target was looming to finish 100 laps of his garden. Amazingly Tom finished 2 weeks ahead of schedule and his final lap was live-streamed by the BBC with soldiers from the Yorkshire Regiment forming a guard of honor and saluted him as he crossed the finish line.
A foundation in his name:
Thanks to Tom and all of the support from the UK and around the world a foundation was set up in Toms name here they help combat loneliness, support those facing bereavement, supporting friends overseas, and championing education and equality.
Captain Tom has captured the hearts of the nation and demonstrated a lifetime of bravery and compassion.
To date, Captain Tom Moore has been able to raise over £38 million for the brave souls within the NHS fighting for the win with COVID-19.
